Advent and Christmastide can also be a time for us to ponder past celebrations. They can refresh and revitalize our souls.
Years ago, my congregation decorated their sanctuary with two symbolic evergreen trees. One tree was decorated with 33 apples. They represented the fruit which tempted Eve in the Garden of Eden. The second tree was decorated with 33 roses. They represented the beautiful gifts that Jesus brought us. The number 33 is used since Jesus was 33 when he died on Calvary’s cross and rose again for our salvation.
This tradition gave me an opportunity to focus my
attention on the reason for the season.
