As a child growing up in Indiana, I delighted in catching lightning bugs during the hot, humid summer months. Borrowing a glass jar from my mom’s canning cellar, poking holes in the lid with an ice pick, and adding a damp piece of paper towel gave me hope that my bugs might last until morning.
I’d sit with the jar in my lap, mesmerized by the blinking, often thinking about God and his light creations…not just sun, moon, and stars, but all the creatures that use some form of light to communicate, like my bugs! WOW!
My bugs were a reminder of Jesus’ words that we are lights for the nations. He blesses us daily to go into the world and be his heart, hands, and feet!
