Deep into Meramec Caverns we stopped and suddenly the lights went out. No one moved. The darkness was so thick it felt heavy. Never before had I experienced total darkness. Even out in the country on a cloudy night, some light is present. The darkness of sin without knowing that there is a Savior is like that darkness in the cave. There is no light.
But John says in his first letter that in God there is only light, “no darkness at all.” If darkness can be that thick and heavy, as in a cave, think what total light must be like. That is the Savior, our salvation, that John proclaims, “In him there is no darkness at all” (1 John 1:5).
