Verb Tenses We Need

Oct 7, 2024    Jan Bathke

As a former schoolteacher, I drilled verb tenses into my mostly disinterested students. Some of them didn’t care about “past,” “present,” and “future” tenses. But God does.

As we age, we think about how our frailties can impact our future. Let’s see what Scripture has to say about God’s verb tenses.

Isaiah 43:1 reminds us of God’s faithfulness in the past when he says, “I have called you by name.” We see the present tense in Isaiah 41:10 when he says, “so do not fear for I am with you.” And verse 41:10b comforts us when we think about our future: “I will strengthen you and help you.”

So, my hopefully interested students, revel in God’s tenses. Rejoice in his faithfulness to his children in the “past,” the

“present,” and the “future.”
