Called to Serve
... Through love serve one another.
Galatians 5:13
My seven-year-old daughter proudly showed me the book she had made at school. “My mother’s favorite job,” she had written, “is changing my brother’s diapers.” When I asked why she thought I loved that task, she replied, “Because you always sing when you do it.” Only years later would she realize singing was my trick to make him hold still.
As Christians, we may wonder what monumental calling God has planned for us, while overlooking the everyday opportunities for service he has placed in our paths. As Jesus stooped to wash the feet of his disciples, he calls us to dry a child’s tears, run errands for a shut- in, provide transportation for a neighbor, or cook an extra pot of soup. Mother Theresa said, “We can do small things with great love.”
