Good Things Satisfy

People bond over food! As in 600 BC, sharing treats like figs, nuts, olives, and wine might signify our allegiance. When Daniel and his friends refused the king’s lavish foods and wine, they were making the point that they would stay pure, strong, and loyal to God.

We can learn from Daniel that the Holy Spirit strengthens us when we consume gifts wisely. Paul reinforces the same idea. “All things are lawful for me, but not all things are helpful” (Corinthians 6:12).

It can be challenging to prepare or wait for healthier food; to embrace that which will bring us useful energy. The time and effort we devote to peeling an orange, rather than grabbing cookies, will be rewarded with a clearer body and mind with which to serve the Lord!

Prayer: Father, strengthen me to select a food or drink that will better fortify me. Amen.
